I thought that we had a great first day of school. This looks like a great bunch of kids. We worked on reading big numbers on the Smartboard, wrote a poem about ourselves, and practiced our observation skills in science.

Today was a big day for testing. We began with our reading and spelling tests which was followed by the science test. Then students wrote a short one day story for Writing. For Social Studies we did research on the state of our choice. Go to this website to find your state to do your research. http://www.agclassroom.org/kids/ag_facts.htm Students need to tell about the climate, soil, crops, animals, and general information. We will share this information as a group on Monday. The literature group reading Al Capone Does My Shirts will be reading chapters 28-33 for next Friday. In math we did Choose an Operation on page 291.
Our Valentine party will be on February 14. If you would like to make something to share with our class and Mrs. Roemer's class please let me know. We are looking for both healthy and not so healthy snacks. Our math assignment for today was on page 289 6-28. You should also know the meaning of the commutative and associative properties of multiplication. Commutative is the order doesn't matter 5x6 or 6x5. Associative means that you can change the grouping of the factors. (5x2)x3=5x(2x3).
In social studies class we talked about the use of land in the United States. Much of our land is used for agriculture. We are researching agriculture in several states. Let me know what state you'd like to research and I'll get the information for you to use. We'll be working on that tomor Our first week back in school after vacation went well. I'm not sure how today went since I was out teaching other teachers about writing. I did share Brian's writing with them and they liked it. Did everyone remember to fill in their picture reading log? I hope so. I will be out again tomorrow learning more about how to plan a special unit for science class.
Here is an interesting video that explains how the Ancient Egyptians multiplied and divided. It's also how computers do it. http://www.wimp.com/egyptiansmath/
